OBE Training Modules

Comprehensive Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Training Module framework designed for faculty and academic administrators. This modular approach can be adapted for half-day, full-day, or multi-day workshops, depending on depth and audience experience. It incorporates key theoretical concepts, practical activities, and implementation strategies.

Module 1: Introduction to Outcome-Based Education

Objectives:

  • Understand the philosophy and evolution of OBE.

  • Contrast OBE with traditional education models.

Content:

  • Historical background (Spady’s model)

  • Key principles of OBE (clarity, flexibility, accountability)

  • International frameworks (e.g., Washington Accord)

  • Indian context – OBE in AICTE, NBA, NAAC

Activities:

  • Group discussion: Challenges in current education delivery

  • Brainstorming: What "outcomes" really mean

Module 2: Vision, Mission, PEOs, POs, PSOs, and COs

Objectives:

  • Understand hierarchical flow from Vision to Course Outcomes.

  • Learn to formulate institutional vision/mission and program outcomes.

Content:

  • Definitions: Vision, Mission, PEO, PO, PSO, CO

  • Mapping relationships between each level

  • SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely)  criteria for PEO/PO/CO formulation

Activities:

  • Draft sample Vision/Mission statements

  • Group exercise on writing COs for a course

Module 3: Bloom’s Taxonomy & CO Framing

Objectives:

  • Use Bloom’s Taxonomy to frame measurable outcomes.

  • Identify appropriate action verbs.

Content:

  • Cognitive domain levels (Remember to Create)

  • Affective and Psychomotor domains (briefly)

  • Action verbs for each level

  • Common mistakes in CO formulation

Activities:

  • Match-the-level activity: Verbs vs. Bloom’s level

  • Create 5 COs for a sample topic using Bloom’s

Module 4: CO-PO Mapping & Attainment Calculation

Objectives:

  • Map Course Outcomes to Program Outcomes.

  • Understand direct and indirect attainment calculations.

Content:

  • One-to-many, many-to-one CO-PO mapping matrix

  • Mapping strength levels (1, 2, 3)

  • CO Attainment via internal/exam assessment

  • PO Attainment via aggregation

  • Target setting, Gap Analysis

Activities:

  • Hands-on CO-PO mapping with rubrics

  • Spreadsheet exercise on attainment calculation

Module 5: Assessment Design in OBE

Objectives:

  • Design assessments aligned with outcomes.

  • Understand formative vs. summative evaluation.

Content:

  • Outcome-based question paper design

  • Internal Assessment vs. End-Sem Assessment

  • Rubric design for assignments and labs

  • CO-based question weightage

Activities:

  • Design 2 sample questions per Bloom level

  • CO-tagging of a test paper

Module 6: Direct and Indirect Assessment Tools

Objectives:

  • Understand data sources for CO/PO attainment.

  • Use surveys and feedback for indirect assessment.

Content:

  • Direct methods: exams, lab work, mini-projects

  • Indirect methods: student feedback, alumni/employer surveys

  • Tools: Google Forms, LMS-based tracking

Activities:

  • Develop a feedback form mapped to POs

  • Analyze a sample survey and interpret the outcome

Module 7: OBE Implementation and Continuous Improvement

Objectives:

  • Learn how to implement OBE in curriculum and teaching.

  • Understand the CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) cycle.

Content:

  • Setting up OBE at the course and program level

  • Academic and administrative roles

  • Closing the loop: Analysis → Action → Improvement

  • Documentation for audits

Activities:

  • Prepare a CQI report from sample data

  • Brainstorm session: Barriers to OBE implementation

Module 8: NBA/NAAC Perspective on OBE

Objectives:

  • Align OBE practice with accreditation expectations.

Content:
